What does one do when they want to learn a new language, how can I get started?

I want to learn Japanese. I was thinking getting Rosetta Stone? Is there any other way to learn the language? At my school they only teach Spanish & French, I don't think there's any local place I can go to learn it. What can I do? I want to learn to speak, read and write Japanese.
