Is there any to switch my number to a new phone without it costing?

my verizon blackberry isnt working at all anymore it wont keep its charge and it huts off randomly but my brother in law has another blackberry phone that works but he doesnt use it bc he has a new phone now..is there anyway i could get my number switched to that phone without it costing and use that?
