How would i know if a friend of mine likes me as much as i like him?

we've been chatting for three months over facebook and we're trying hard to learn eachother's native language(his is japanese and mine of course is english) and i've actually started to like him.i want to break out of the friend zone but i don't want to scare him off if he doesn't think the same thing on his part. how could i find out without it being too awkward?
